HC FRIBOURG-GOTTÉRON

With an impressive 7–2 victory over the Straubing Tigers, HC Fribourg-Gottéron captured its first-ever Spengler Cup title on December 31, 2024. Now, the “Dragons” return to Davos to defend their triumph at the 97th Spengler Cup.
For Fribourg – the longest-standing club in Switzerland’s National League – this marks their fourth appearance at the prestigious tournament. After finishing fifth in 1992 and reaching the semifinals in 2012, the big breakthrough came in 2024. In the semifinals, Fribourg eliminated hosts HC Davos, before taking early control of the final – leading 3–1 after less than three minutes against Germany’s Straubing Tigers.
Behind the bench stands a major name: Roger Rönnberg, the long-time successful coach of Frölunda Göteborg, took over the team this summer. The Swede, who participated in the 2023 Spengler Cup with Frölunda, had personally expressed his wish for Fribourg to return. He is joined by Lars Leuenberger, who guided the Dragons to the title in 2024 as interim head coach.
The challenge of defending the trophy now awaits.
