A traditional powerhouse is returning to the 97th Spengler Cup: HC Sparta Praha is coming back to Davos. The Czech top team brings not only history and class, but also strong ambitions – and will compete for the 11th time at the world’s oldest club tournament.
With Sparta Prague, one of the most renowned and successful hockey clubs in the Czech Republic is confirmed for this year’s edition. The Prague-based team has already lifted the Spengler Cup trophy twice (1962, 1963) and most recently reached the final in 2022, where they narrowly lost to Ambrì-Piotta in a penalty shootout. This year marks their eleventh appearance in Davos.
HC Sparta Praha is one of the most storied clubs in European hockey. Active since 1909, the team has won eight national championships. In recent years, Sparta has shown consistent excellence, finishing every season since 2019/20 in the top three. During the 2024/25 campaign, Sparta, led by head coach Pavel Gross, claimed the regular season title and only fell short in a hard-fought playoff semifinal series against champions Kometa Brno.
Sparta has also made headlines on the international stage. The club reached the finals of major European tournaments three times – most recently in the 2017 Champions Hockey League, where they were narrowly defeated in overtime by Frölunda.
With Sparta Prague, Fribourg-Gottéron, HC Davos and Team Canada, four of the six participating teams for the 97th Spengler Cup are now confirmed. Online ticket sales for single games will begin on September 9th 2025. Full tournament passes can already be reserved via the online form.
