Frölunda HC confirmed for Spengler Cup Davos 2026

The 98th Spengler Cup Davos gains further top-class quality: Frölunda HC has been confirmed as the third participating team. The Swedish powerhouse from Gothenburg currently tops the SHL standings and has qualified for the Final of the Champions Hockey League.

Frölunda HC made its Spengler Cup debut in 2023, at that time still coached by Roger Rönnberg, now head coach of HC Fribourg-Gottéron. Since then, the club from Gothenburg has further strengthened its position among Europe’s elite. Over the past two seasons, Frölunda reached the semi-finals of the Swedish championship and currently sits top of the SHL, boasting one of the league’s most productive offences as well as its most solid defence.

On the international stage, Frölunda HC has been one of Europe’s most successful ice hockey organisations for years. In the Champions Hockey League, the Swedes have qualified for the final for the sixth time in nine appearances, with the Final scheduled for 3 March 2026 against Luleå. Frölunda has lifted the CHL trophy on four occasions (2016, 2017, 2019, 2020).

Marc Gianola, President of the Spengler Cup Organising Committee, says: «Frölunda HC is one of Europe’s leading hockey organisations, and we are delighted to welcome them back to Davos. Since their debut in 2023, the club has shown a strong desire to return, which underlines the special appeal of the Spengler Cup.»

Christian Lechtaler, Director of Frölunda HC, states: «We are excited to return to Davos for another tournament and honored to have been invited once again. As always, our goal is to win every competition we enter, and this is another opportunity for us to do just that. Taking part in a tournament with over a century of history feels truly special. We are ready for the challenge. »

A Swedish triumph at the Spengler Cup dates back some time: in 1994, Färjestad BK became the last Swedish team to win the prestigious tournament. At their most recent appearance in 2023, Frölunda HC was eliminated in the semi-finals by eventual champion HC Davos.

With Frölunda HC, the SCL Tigers and host and defending champion HC Davos confirmed, three of the six participating teams for the 98th Spengler Cup Davos are now known. The remaining teams will be announced once the relevant contracts have been finalised.

Advance sales for single-game tickets will start on 8 September 2026 at 10:00 a.m. Season tickets for all eleven games can be ordered from mid-July. VIP hospitality packages are already available for booking via the official Spengler Cup website.
