Team Canada and Hockey Club Davos – each with 15 Spengler Cup wins – were already seeded for the tournament. With the addition of HK Metallurg Magnitogorsk, Fredi Pargätzi can proudly announce the participation of another top-rate team. “It is a sensation, that we are able to welcome such a team in Davos.” The Russians are one of the most successful teams in the Kontinental Hockey League KHL. For the past 5 years the team has been at the top of the KHL, winning the Championship in 2014 and 2016. The last time HK Metallurg Magnitogorsk participated at the Spengler Cup was in 2005 – and triumphed.

Třinec – Champions Hockey League finalist

Among the three Spengler Cup premieres are HC Oceláři Třinec (Czech Republic), KalPa Kuopio Hockey Oy (Finland) and the Thomas Sabo Ice Tigers (Germany).

HC Oceláři Třinec is vice-champion of the Czech Extraliga and semi-finalist in the Champions Hockey League. The Head Coach of the team from the city of Třinec, known for it’s steel industry and located on the border to Poland, is Vàclav Varad’a. He played with Davos during the 2006/07 season, winning the Spengler Cup and Swiss Championship.

With German Olympic Medal Winners

KalPa Kuopio Hockey Oy from the Finnish League with its young, offense-strong team are well-suited to the Spengler Cup. The Finns advanced to the quarter-finals in last year’s league season. The club is managed by the ex-NHL players Kimmo Timonen and Sami Kapanen. The Thomas Sabo Ice Tigers complete the field with another top-rated team aspiring to take the cup. Yasin Ehliz, Oliver Mebus and Niklas Treutle played with the German Ice-Hockey National Team at this year’s World Championships in Denmark. Yasin Ehliz, Patrick Reimer and Leo Pföderl won the silver medal with the German team at the Olympic Games in Pyeongchang.
