On day two the host HC Davos began its campaign at the 89th Spengler Cup and started strong against the KHL team Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg. 10 minutes into the game, a Beat Forster shot narrowly missed the net, but got the crowd at the sold-out Vaillant Arena into the game.

While the home team could not capitalize on a power-play, the Russians used a man advantage of their own to take the lead. Captain Petr Koukal got HCD keeper Leonardo Genoni sprawling before serving Alexei Mikhnov (20./pp) from behind the net to score their first before the buzzer.

No payoff for Davos

Even after the game restarted, Davos was initially denied a goal. Alexandre Picard - the Canadian reinforcement from Genève-Servette HC – was brought down, but failed to capitalize on the subsequent penalty shot.

Nonetheless Arno Del Curto’s team took command in the second period.

Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg used a counter attack to extend their lead on an Anatoli Golyshev (30.) goal. Devin Setoguchi found the appropriate response and cut the lead to 2-1 with Davos’ first goal of the tournament on a shot from in close.

The Russians showed an efficient style of play and pulled ahead 4-1 in the second period. After Anatoli Golyshev laid the groundwork, Sergey Yemelin (34.) found an open net before him and a tip-in by Anrei Alexeyev (39.) on a shot from the distance by Nikolai Timashov.

In the final period the superior Russians put the game out of reach. With a fine solo effort Alexei Mikhnov (52.) secured his team the first win at the Spengler Cup.
