With two goals in the middle period, Team Canada waltzes past the harmless host team HC Davos to reach the semifinals. Alexandre Giroux (26.) from the NLA Club HC Ambri-Piotta brought the Canadians the lead. The puck which bounced back from the boards in front of HCD-keeper Leonardo Genoni was dispatched between his leg pads and into the net by Chris Didomenico (32.) of the SCL Tigers.

In the first part of this classic match-up at the 89th Spengler Cup, there was much to see before the superior Team Canada dominated the home team. The fast-paced hockey inspired the fans at the sold-out Vaillant Arena. The only thing missing was an array of actual goals.

Goal-Keepers in the spotlight

With a shots-on-goals count of 42 to 24, the Canadians kept Genoni - in goal for the locals - very busy indeed and with his performance saved face for the yellow-blue favorites. In the deciding middle period alone, the puck was shot in his direction 19 times.

On the opposing side, Jeff Glass wearing the Team Canada colors, was able to celebrate the first shutout of the tournament.

With 2 losses, the host team HC Davos stand with their backs against the wall and need the win against Jokerit Helsinki. The Canadians performance remains unblemished so far with 2 wins qualifying them directly for the semifinals.
