After Davos’ tournament had come to an end against Team Canada, HC Lugano as the Swiss representative tried to move on to the final of the 89th Spengler Cup in Davos. Doug Shedden’s team needed a solid effort to do so against the Russian KHL squad Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg.

The Ticinesi had more drive to the net to begin the game.

The Swiss recorded more than twice as many shots on net. And their pressure was rewarded. The American Tim Stapleton (16.) opened the scoring on a redirected shot by Furrer.

Doug Shedden’s players came back just as dominant in the second. Linus Klasen (25.) made it 2-0 with his fourth of the tournament. The Swede was put in play by his countryman Fredrik Pettersson, moved around the Russian keeper, and slipped the puck over the line.

Lugano prevented the Russians from getting back in the game and remained lights out – even short-handed. On the power-play and with time running out Yekaterinburg went all out, as Andrey Razin pulled his keeper, and his players peppered HCL keeper Elvis Merzlikins, who turned away 30 shots.

Damien Brunner secured the final berth with an empty-netter to make it 3-0.

After the final buzzer the Ticinesi’s Latvian keeper celebrated the shutout with his “superman” in front of the spectators at the sold-out Vaillant Arena.
