Rüeger: 38 and still in Touch

Ronny Rüeger
His calmness is one of Ronny Rüeger’s most important characteristics. Even if the Kloten Flyers' goaltender has to let a puck pass into his net after an unlucky save, the experienced Rüeger immediately manages to rebuild his concentration, focus on the game, regain his composure and show a convincing performance. This ability has always been one of his main weapons throughout his career as a professional hockey player: calmness is the key to his success.
With his 181 playoff games, Rüeger is the most experienced of all Swiss national league players. But although he is 38 years old by now, he's not tired in the least and is not thinking of ending his professional hockey career just yet: “After this season, I’d like to play for another year, maybe even two. As long as I enjoy playing hockey and can play at such a high level, I’ll certainly stay with the Kloten Flyers,” says Rüeger.
Swiss Champion with Zug and Lugano
What keeps the former Swiss national team’s goaltender going? “That’s easy, it’s the fun for the game. I’m feeling very fit and I'm really enjoying hockey still,“ says Rüeger.
Rüeger celebrated his first big success when he was 25 years old and won the Swiss national championship with EV Zug in 1998. The goaltender and his strong performances were one of the main reasons for this championship win. He then moved on to HC Lugano and won the Swiss championship twice with the team from Ticino.
Two Very Close Defeats in the Playoff Finals
With his current team, the Kloten Flyers, the experienced goalie has made it to the playoff finals twice already. In both instances, in 2009 and 2011, his team from the canton of Zurich lost against Spengler Cup hosts HC Davos – the matches were incredibly tight in both years.
Even if he decides to end his active hockey career one day, he’ll most probably keep in touch with the Kloten Flyers and may even keep on working for the organization. He doesn’t live far from the team’s home stadium – this would really make an easy commute.
