Servette Geneva Overpowers Sparta Prague
On the second day of the tournament, Spengler Cup novice Servette Geneva has won its first game. The team from Western Switzerland beat Sparta Prague 4:3. Josh Hennessy, loaned from Lugano for the Spengler Cup, scored three points.
Félicien Du Bois, whom Sparta loaned from the Kloten Flyers, was in the middle of the action twice for the Czech team. First he scored a goal, firing a slapshot into the back of the net to put his team 3:2 ahead. Then, after Hennessy beat Prague keeper Pöpperle with a sharp angle shot in a power play, Du Bois was responsible for Geneva's game-winning goal: Outstanding Hennessy snuck the puck from Du Bois's stick and Savary converted his assist coolly (47.).
Former Servette Player Treille Scores
Geneva found its way back into the game twice. After Kurkas's goal to take the 0:1 lead, Randegger equalized four minutes later with a magnificent flick of the puck into the corner of the net. Servette Geneva now turned up the pace.
In the 37th minute, Fritsche deflected a shot and put the Geneva side in front for the first time at this year's Spengler Cup. But just 53 seconds before the second whistle, former Servette forward Treille deflected a shot with his skates: There was nothing Geneva goalkeeper Stephan could have done. But neither this setback nor Du Bois's goal worried Chris McSorley's team too much: They came back to claim the victory.
