Big focus on the referees

Es geht zur Sache
The Spengler Cup is an important tournament not only for the teams playing but also for the referees.
"Despite the enormous amount of pressure, the biggest goal a ref has at the Spengler Cup is to provide the best officiating possible," explains Reto Bertolotti, the chief referee for the Swiss Ice Hockey (SIH) league. Last year a four-man system was introduced and it worked exceptionally well, which is an absolute requirement at this level of play.
Through the absences of the top referees, Danny Kurmann and Brent Reiber (Junior World Championships in Canada), two Swiss refs, Marco Prugger and Daniel Stricker will officiate for the Spengler Cup opening game, along with Morgan Johansson (Sweden) and Derek Zalaski (Canada). Jyri Rönn (Finland) already worked last year as a referee at the Spengler Cup.
