5 teams take part in the Spengler Cup. During the qualification round each team play the other 4 teams. The 2 best clubs meet in the final to determine the winner of the tournament. Consequently, each team plays at least 4 games during 5 days or 5 games in 6 days at maximum.
Each match will be decided, either in the regular play time or in an extra time respectively in a penalty shoot-out. During the qualification round points will be awarded:
Win after 60 minutes = 2 points for the winner
Draw after 60 minutes = 1 point for each team
Overtime: the winning team receives an extra point
Penalty shoot-out: the winning team receives an extra point
If 2 or more teams end up with the same number of points, tiebreakers are used in the following order:
a) Head-to-head results:
1. points
2. goal difference after the direct meeting
b) Goal difference after all matches:
Scored goals minus received goals
c) Goal quotient after all matches:
Scored goals over received goals
d) Drawing of lots
The most successful team and the runner-up after the qualification round play one final game to determine the winner of the tournament. The procedure after 60 minutes:
