“Originally the idea was to play in the KHL, but that did not work out”, Fedorov describes his motivation behind the comeback. In the current season, his Russian KHL squad had to at times get along without seven starting players, which got Fedorov, who is the General Manager of CSKA, thinking about a return to the ice. However, his priorities lie with the duties as General Manager.
“The Spengler Cup is important to us”
It means a lot to the Russian to be a participant at the Spengler Cup. “All of our players can profit from the tournament in Davos”, knows the manager. Who, since the European Cup finals in 1988, regularly visits the highest town in Europe – his latest visit being the Spengler Cup one year ago.
After the tournament in Davos, the four-time world champion and two-time Olympic medal winner will continue his journey to Detroit, where the Winter Classic will be taking place. Fedorov won three Stanley Cup titles with the Detroit Red Wings.
Before his visit to the U.S., Sergei Fedorov is looking to come out big at the Spengler Cup with CSKA Moscow. In his first game, despite an immense effort, he ended up without scoring any points. Today, Saturday, at 3pm the “Playing General Manager” will receive his next opportunity against Genève-Servette HC.
